They are typically spaced about 125 ft apart in urban areas, or about 300 ft in rural areas. Most utility poles are made of wood, pressure-treated with some type of preservative for protection against rot, fungi and insects. Southern yellow pine is the most widely used species in the United States. Traditionally, the preservative used was creosote, but due to environmental concerns, alternatives such as pentachlorophenol. For over 100 years, the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) has developed the standards for preserving wood utility poles. Despite the preservatives, wood poles decay and have a life of approximately 25 to 50 years depending on climate and soil conditions.

As cool and unique as the Moon Towers of Austin are, their original purpose for being built is not so cool. A string of murders was happening around the city, mainly the East Side and Downtown. The Moon Towers were constructed to light up the dark city streets and help deter a serial killer from serial killing.

Where in the world did the tree originally grow that the wood came from?

However, my urge to take pictures and my overall consistency of taking pictures comes and goes like the ocean tide. I felt that if I wanted to sharpen my skills and also develop it into a routine, I needed to take it to the next level.

A month or two before migrating into the year 2015 I decided to start a “ picture a day for 365 days” project (like so many other photographers before me have done). It seems like a great idea – force myself to always have my camera, always be on the lookout for interesting subject matter, and always post a picture everyday (regardless if it is good or bad). So I have decided to do just that. What’s the worst that could happen?
